The building brief was to create quality working and teaching environments that are sustainable, innovative, flexible, technologically advanced, workable, affordable, enjoyable, integrated and productive. The challenge was creating ’learning by doing’ spaces within a very confined footprint. Put simply the program was much larger than the space available.

Outcomes

The Integrated Technology Hub at Box Hill Institute is a shining example of sustainable and innovative design in the education sector. The facility has been awarded a 5-star Green Star Education Design v.1 certification from the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA), recognizing its exceptional performance in environmental sustainability.

Spanning four levels, this state-of-the-art hub houses a diverse array of advanced educational spaces to support the growing demand for technical trades training in Melbourne. The building features cutting-edge tertiary-level teaching and learning areas, as well as high-load engineering facilities tailored to disciplines such as air conditioning, mechanical services, refrigeration, plumbing, and building construction.

Complementing these specialized teaching spaces are flexible learning areas that can be adapted to a wide range of educational needs, ensuring the facility remains responsive to the evolving requirements of the local community. This integrated and versatile design is a testament to the deep understanding of the future-focused needs of technical education.

One of the most innovative elements of the Integrated Technology Hub is its "containerized" curriculum approach to the workshop teaching spaces. This ingenious system allows for the deployment of packaged curriculum, complete with all necessary equipment and services, from modular units as required. When not in use, the inactive curriculum is neatly stacked and stored, creating a dynamic and efficient workshop environment that is transparent and also engaging for the public.
