Outcomes
The VE Staff Hub project at RMIT University's Building 57 showcases Spowers' commitment to creating innovative and sustainable spaces that fosters collaboration and productivity. The refurbishment project located in the Carlton Campus Precinct aimed to consolidate dispersed staff cohort across multiple buildings into a single, cohesive environment to support and reinforce the newly established College of VE.
Design Approach
The project looked to provide an improved staff experience and encourage staff to stay on campus outside teaching obligations and provide a contemporary work environment which fosters and encourage the cross pollination of the VE sub-groups, enabling collaboration and knowledge sharing. The space was designed to support agile working in the post-pandemic world, creating a sense of belonging for this newly formed College was important.
Integration of Iconic Architecture
The design skilfully incorporated the iconic brutalist façade of the Edward Jackson building. The rich, earthy tones of the brickwork were showcased through panoramic views, creating a seamless link between the interior and exterior spaces. This approach celebrated the building's original architecture while enhancing the interior aesthetic.
Sustainable Practices
Spowers conducted an intensive interrogation of the existing conditions, services and furniture was undertaken by the team at the outset, working in partnership with RMIT to develop a strong set of ESD principles.
Rigor around dematerialisation was undertaken as all stages of the design to ensure cost effectiveness and value for money as well as minimising environmental impact.
Collaborative and Flexible Spaces
As a main driver for this project, the design included various collaborative spaces such as breakout areas and open project spaces supported by technology. These areas were designed to encourage idea sharing and creativity, supporting a range of activities from team meetings to brainstorming sessions.
Focus on Well-being
The environment was designed to be mature and calming, promoting well-being and focus amidst the bustling activities of the university. This was achieved through careful spatial layouts and the use of natural materials and tones. Biophilic principles were followed ensuring access to natural light and an external view to all workspaces, and internal plantings.
Advanced IT Infrastructure
The space was equipped with modern technology and IT infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of staff. This included elevated meeting spaces with advanced audiovisual systems to support hybrid working models and enhance productivity.
